In the heart of the enchanting rolling fields, lived a boy named Shepherd. His being was mostly untarnished, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was essentially to care for his herd of ewes.
Their soft bleating and the whispering of the wind across the solo tree on the mountaintop were his constant associates. Day after day, guarding his wards inculcated in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for company. During one such occasion because of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous scheme.
Narratives of wild beasts prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a trick on the villagers.
One day he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills for rescue but found nothing threatening.
The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This game laughed for a few days more. But, one noon, a real wolf actually charge at the herd. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is tough to regain. It's a story as appropriate today here as it was in the past.
